The 5-8th July 2018, York held its first ever horticultural festival, celebrating 250 years of the cities historical roots with the ancient society of York florists.
Floral displays sprouted across the city in preparation, the streets were transformed into a colourful combination of flowers, greenery, trees, and even our grass.
Not just one for decorating the streets but Make it York really went to town to make sure everybody could enjoy the festival.
There were community arts projects, hidden garden trials, beer garden competitions, Garden photography competitions, science zones, and even a vegetarian street food market.
The WowGrass Takeover
Been a company located within the York area, Lindum and WowGrass jumped at the chance to be involved and show the city what we are all about.
The Train Station
The first step….To welcome tourists at the train station with a “Chill Zone.” Here we covered an area with our Soil Free grass. We erected our WOW Wall to act as a back drop and even set up one of our grass sofas. Tourists and travellers alike Flocked to the “Chill Zone” to enjoy the real fresh grass indoors before moving on to catch their trains.
The Minster Wall
The second Step…… Building a huge Grass photo Wall for Thor’s Tipi in Deans Park Gardens behind York Minster.
Once dressed this wall had a huge impact on the event space. It hid a large blank white marquee wall, which allowed the settings to blend in with the Tipi Tent. It was also dressed with some floral Angel wings. The wall looked fantastic as a photo backdrop.
St Sampson Square
The Show Stopper. …. To finish off with a project that really added the “WOW” Factor, we decided that we were going to transform a huge 490m2 of grey paving right in the city centre into a pop up village green for everyone to enjoy. We used big rolls for the project that required a tractor to lay them. This proved extremely popular with members of the public and tourists opting to use the space to sit and relax.
After months in the planning and growing, it seems every corner of York City centre was transformed with a pop of colour and floral displays and the festival proved a huge success.
